PRE-SNAP COMMUNICATION AND AWARENESS
BE ALERT TO PERSONNEL/FORMATIONS/BACKS & WR ALIGNMENTS/SHIFTTS/MOTIONS. ANTICIPATE WHAT THE OFFENSE MAY DO BASED ON TENDENCIES AND FILM STUDY.
DEFENSIVE CALL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. MIKE LINEBACKER (CALL LB)
A) Set the bubble (NG and 5 Tech)
B) Give any alignment change or stunt change to tackles
2. WILL LINEBACKER
A) Call out backfield set
B) Call out any backfield motion
3. SAM LINEBACKER
A) Formation recognition, alert any Y/TE motion or shift, declare run strength
B) Acknowledge force rule with raised hand
A) Recognize offensive formation strength (RIP or LIZ), align to pass strength
B) Acknowledge free safety pass coverage call. Repeat call vebally, use hand signals also
C) Call out force responsibility, repeat until acknowledged by fill responsibility player
5. DEFENSIVE CHECKS & ADJUSTMENTS
A) Know the game plan. Recognition of unusual formations and the coverage associated
with these formations is the responsibility of the entire defense.
B) Linebackers and secondary must communicate the check both verbally and with hand
signals. Eliminate all mental errors by communicating wit each other.
C) Motion checks are the final phase of pre-snap communication. Motion checks may also
change coverage. The check may or may not change the progression of the LB and pass rush lanes. Y/TE shift may force an adjustment.
D) Linebackers will make call to change our front, stunt or games. Repeat call until DL and
LB moves. Changes must occur quickly.
E) Linebacker call is final. Play the call.
